The adventurers climb out of the Shadow Rift into the Mists of Ravenloft. Having been accustomed to the mists they start off walking in a random direction. Soon the mists start to clear and they find themselves in a jagged, volcanic mountain range. There was no such mountain range in Tepest where the party entered into the Shadow Rift. The party was on a a crude pathway passing a lake, Mara looked for tracks but there were many tracks heading in both directions so the party started walking to the right. The pathway was rugged and movement was rather slow until they joined a wider damp, muddy road rutted and rough with old wagon tracks and boot prints.
A break in the trees revealed that the party was not alone, ahead they saw a lone figure of a small dark haired woman traveling the same direction. See was leaning heavily on a wooden staff with each of her weary steps. Lythandar hailed the woman and as she turned to look the party could see that she was heavy with child. Approaching the party asked her name, she responded in some unintelligible language. Melisana cast a Comprehend Languages Ritual with aid from Lythandar, Alhellara, Pretis and Gofin. She found she could understand the woman but not speak to her. The woman said her name was Marit and that she was looking for her husband Victor, who was sent into battle against the forces of the Whispered Lord. She is constantly glancing around with worried expression and fiddles with her ring. The learned her home was Tor Gorag and she was trying to return, about a 2 day journey. Lythandar cast a Tensor's Floating Disk for Marit to ride on and Alhellara joined her as Pretis and Demin looked around for an ambush.
As the party moved down the roadway they came upon a dead body marked with unnatural wounds that were filled with greenish ooze and surrounded by small blisters. Fearing that it could be Victor they brought Marit forward. Marit initially ignored the dead body completely, like it wasn't there, until forced to look by the party. She said it was not Victor and mumbled something about "horrible death machines." Demin was trying to see if there was any loot on the body but found nothing. Continuing down the road the party came upon 3 Black Wolves tearing apart a large bull elk. Mara, Demin and Alhellara warned that there were more wolves in a stand of trees nearby. Demion moved forward to attack the wolves from a distance and was surrounded by 5 wolves from the woods which knocked him prone. From the rear another wolf and a Dire Wolf attacked Gofin and Melisana. Melisana attacked and teleported everyone except Mara across the stream to the east the party continued to attack with Lythandar casting a fireball which killed several wolves and damaged a few others. The wolves continued the attack but were cut down. In the aftermath the party found 9 black wolves and a Dire Wolf.
Score Card: The party found no treasure but gained 300XP each for the encounter.
