Opening the doorway provided a view of a large room, 5 humans and an Iron Gorgon. The area just inside the door was strewn with furniture making creating difficult terrain. Demin leaped to the fore shooting a cloud of steel at several humans with crossbow and then taking an action point to target one of them again. Lythandar and Gofin moved up as the Gorgon charged into the fray. The mercenary humans spread out and fired crossbows at the party entering the doorway. Pretis moved to the fore followed by Mara. Melisana wrote the fire symbol amongst the enemy as several more mercenaries moved into a hallway leading into the room. One mercenary was using a long bow instead of a crossbow.
Alhellara positioned her Astral Defenders in the middle of the hallway in front of two of the mercenaries. As the battle continued the Gorgon Trampled through the party dealing damage as it moved out of the doorway and into the hall. The Gorgon then breathed a petrifying stench on most of the party left in the hall. A female mercenary moved up in the inside hallway, granting attacks to the Astrals, and hurled a dagger at the group. The dagger it was noted flew back to the mercenary. Under continuing pressure the mercenary crossbowmen started to fall.
The battle turned into chaos with several crossbow bolts flying at the adventurers as most of them focused on the Gorgon. Mara shook the earth and Pretis charged the Gorgon dealing damage for once. Suddenly the female leader (Saranay) teleported next to Demin and attacked viciously with her dagger. Demin took an incredible hit, and a secondary poison hit, and found himself lying face down unconscious on the floor. As Lythandar moved around the chamber casting magic missiles and scorching bursts the bowman moved into the room past the Astrals. The Gorgon fell to the attacks of several party members and Pretis healed Demin who stayed put on the floor. The crossbowmen were falling swiftly now and Saranay was dispatched. Pretis moved up to attack the bowman who teleported away at being hit and fired his bow back at Pretis.
Finally the last crossbowmen and the long bow attacker fell and the party licked their wounds. Pretis decided to move into the internal hallway which led to another room where several sleeping bundles were arranged around the walls. There was a door to the north and an open hall leading east into an area with bookshelves. Melisana and Lythandar searched for magical items and Demin looked for gold. The area was strewn with remnants of a fire, burned paper and a foul smell. The dagger, the long bow and a ring that Saranay was wearing turned out to be magic and Demin collected 1000 GP.
After a long day the party discussed where to spend an extended rest. They decided to return to the Knowledge Vault where they had found the vial of liquid and orange striped pills earlier, since it had only one entrance. The rest was spent uneventfully as Lythandar determined that they had found a Ring of Freedom of Movement, a Nightstalker Poniard +3 and a Retributive Bow +3.
After the rest the group returned to the Library area which had 20' ceilings with crystal lamps lighting the area, tough most were not lit. The Library seemed to have suffered at the hands of vandals. Some bookshelves were toppled over, the books torn or just empty husks. Lythandar's quick study determined that most of the books were devoted to arcana and necromantic lore. Burned papers littered the floor and by a door in the southeast a crude mattress was created out of papers. Two other doors led out to the south and southwest. As Melisana moved further into the chamber she paused when a character came into view. This "human" was mumbling to himself looking through some ruined books. From the corner of a shelf Melisana hailed the character who immediately turned, gawked and stated: "You cursed demons from the invisible moon!"
Scorecard: The party gained 800 XP for the battle in the Command Post and now have 36,620 XP needing 2380 more to reach 13th level. Gofin claimed the Ring, Demin the dagger and Alhellara the Bow.
